Acid Reflux Surgeries

Gastroesophageal reflux syndrome, also known as acid reflux disease is where the esophageal sphincter cannot hold the stomach contents, and it backs up into the throat or esophagus. When stomach contents back up into the esophagus, burning sensations, scarring, inflammation and infection can result. The beginnings of acid reflux syndrome is also called heartburn, and if allowed to continue becomes a chronic ailment with possible permanent damage.

Your eating habits can affect acid reflux, and you can reduce the effects of acid reflex syndrome by changing your eating habits. Eating large meals before you go to bed, lying prone after eating, highly acidic foods, and the esophagus sphincter muscle that is not working properly can all contribute to acid reflux. Eating smaller meals, eating earlier in the evening before bed, and drinking lots of water can help relieve the symptoms of acid reflux.

Medical treatment is available for those with acid reflex syndrome or disease, but it's still important to adjust your diet and eating habits. There are surgery procedures for those with severe acid reflux condition, and it may be the best chance to minimize a esophagus scarring. Laparoscopic anti-reflex surgery, and intraluminal endoscopic surgery are two of the choices.

Fundoplication is another term laparoscopic Nissan fundoplication surgery, and is one of the most common forms. This form of surgery is to tighten the esophagus walls where it connects to the stomach and adds pressure to lower esophageal muscles. As the pressure is increased, it prevents the acidic contents of the stomach returning to the throat and esophagus. Laparoscopic fundoplication is also used to tighten the inside of the esophagus walls sealing the esophagus and preventing gastric juices from regurgitating.

Another acid reflux surgery procedure is intraluminal endoscopic surgery and is more common than fundoplication. Fast recovery for patients, and the simple procedure involving small optical tubular instruments, allows the physician to view the inner esophagus, esophagus sphincter and stomach opening. Once viewed, repairs can be made via biopsy, surgery techniques, and tightening of the sphincter muscle.

More and more research is being done and medical advancements are being made for acid reflux syndrome. What used to be untreatable is now treatable, via prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and surgery. Untreated acid reflux can not only cause permanent scarring, but can also leave the patient with bacterial infections, severe pain, and inflammation causing difficulty breathing.

The beginnings of acid reflux may feel a lot like a simple heartburn case. But if it continues on and becomes chronic, it's important that you head for your doctor for treatment as soon as possible. Some treatments are simple and quickly effective, while others become a chronic treatment program and possible surgery for acid reflux
